Job Summary (Purpose of Position)
The RF Design Engineer is responsible for detailed radio frequency (RF) planning, design, and optimization of DAS solutions, ensuring indoor wireless coverage meets carrier-grade performance standards, MNO technical specifications, and regulatory requirements.
The role translates coverage requirements into RF designs addressing complex indoor environments such as high-rise buildings, large venues, hotels, hospitals, and commercial facilities.
Key Responsibilities
RF Planning and Design
- Perform in-building RF planning and propagation modeling for DAS solutions.
- Develop detailed RF designs including antenna placement, zoning, and sectorization.
- Prepare link budgets and capacity calculations for multi-technology environments (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G).
- Ensure RF designs achieve required KPIs.
Site Surveys and RF Measurements
- Conduct pre-design site surveys and RF walkthroughs.
- Perform Continuous Wave (CW) testing to assess signal propagation and attenuation.
- Analyze existing coverage conditions and identify coverage gaps.
- Validate RF design assumptions through on-site measurements.
Design Validation and Optimization
- Support post-installation RF testing and optimization activities.
- Analyze drive test and walk test results and recommend corrective actions.
- Fine-tune antenna configurations, power levels, and balancing to optimize performance.
- Ensure compliance with MNO acceptance criteria.
Technical Documentation
- Prepare and maintain RF design documentation, drawings, and reports.
- Contribute to High-Level Design (HLD) and Low-Level Design (LLD) documents.
- Support preparation of commissioning and acceptance test reports.
- Maintain accurate as-built RF documentation.
Coordination and Support
- Coordinate with Engineering Manager, Project Managers, and System Engineers.
- Support discussions with MNO RF teams during design reviews and acceptance.
- Assist Operations and O&M teams with RF-related troubleshooting.
- Participate in technical audits and inspections as required.
Authority / Decision-Making / Delegation of Authority
- Authority to propose RF designs and optimization solutions.
- Recommends RF parameters, antenna layouts, and coverage strategies.
- Implements RF changes as approved by the Engineering Manager.
- Escalates design risks, coverage limitations, or performance issues.
- Acts within approved company DOA and delegated authorities.
